When a baby is born prematurely, that is, at least three weeks before the due date, many of its organs and systems are not mature. It is a baby who may have heart rhythm problems, respiratory, circulatory and kidney difficulties, be underweight, and be more prone to disease or even not surviving.

Every day more babies are born early, and recovery takes a lot of time and dedication. Considering this situation, March of Dimes (Non-profit organization dedicated to promoting health in pregnancy and babies), conducted a study with 500 thousand premature births, in which the effects and benefits of music as a therapeutic alternative for their health were used. It was observed that with the necessary care and alternatives such as music therapy, the health of premature babies had improved remarkably.

In fact, in some hospitals classical or instrumental music is already used as part of therapy. Some go to more, they tend to use lullabies and other added sounds such as that of the heartbeat or the sound of the uterus. Music calms the mind and each of the organs of the premature baby, increasing the probability that he will survive (today 70 percent).

Music helps reduce pain, stabilize sleep and heart rate in babies, gain weight, and feel more secure in the hospital environment. In addition, music helps reduce stress for parents and medical staff. And that music is not advisable only during the time the baby is in the hospital. It is important that when the baby goes home, the parents continue to stimulate him with calm and relaxed music.

With music, babies will eat and sleep better, be more relaxed and stress free. Music speeds up or slows down the brain's rhythm, circulation, respiration, digestion, and metabolism; increases or decreases muscle tone and energy; alters the immune system; and increases neuronal activity in the areas of the brain involved in emotion. Music can also awaken, stimulate and develop various emotions and feelings. It encourages and promotes expression, stimulates concentration and memory, and promotes learning, as well as the development and growth of babies.
